Coffee Beef Stew

Ingredients

2 1/2 pounds beef - cut into 1 inch cubes
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon coarsely ground pepper
3 cups strong brewed Kona coffee
1 cup water
1 cup finely chopped onion
2/3 cup dry red wine
4 cloves garlic - minced
2 cups peeled and cubed potatoes
1/2 cup sliced mushrooms
1/2 cup whole dates - pitted and chopped
2 tablespoons capers

Directions

Sprinkle meat cubes with salt and pepper. Heat pan over med-high heat. Brown beef; add Kona coffee and next 4 ingredients. Bring to a boil and cover. Lower heat and simmer about 45 minutes. Add potatoes, mushrooms, dates and capers. Bring to a boil. Cover, and reduce heat. Simmer 20-25 minutes. Serve over rice, with bread, or alone.
