Barbecued Stewed Beef


1 lb. cubed stewing beef
1 cup ketchup (we used Heinz )
1/2 cup light or dark molasses
1/4 cup prepared mustard (regular French's style)
1/4 cup white vinegar


Season beef cubes with salt and pepper. In large pot, brown beef on all sides; add water to cover, bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer, covered, until beef is tender, adding water if needed. Drain broth and reserve for another use.

Turn oven on broil. Combine ketchup, molasses, mustard and vinegar. Pour over stewed beef and stir to coat meat thoroughly. Scrape beef and sauce into a large, shallow metal pan. Broil, stirring every couple of minutes, until sauce turns darker and thickens, and beef just begins to get slightly crispy on edges - about 4-8 minutes, depending on your oven. (Or microwave for 2 minutes at a time, stirring in between times, for about 8-10 minutes.) Serve immediately.
